چکیده

Mast seeding in conifers is characterized by the spatially synchronous and temporally variable production of seed cone crops. Large mast events (known as “mast years”) can be a visually stunning ecologically important phenomenon, supporting trophic interactions survival predators well forest regeneration. Documenting patterns generally labor-intensive, requiring repeated visual counts at consistent widespread locations over long periods to quantify spatiotemporal variability production. Our goal this work was evaluate correspondence multispectral vegetation indexes (VIs) from Landsat with ground-based observations white spruce (Picea glauca) forests Kluane region, Yukon, Canada. Given characteristics spruce, we tested: 1) whether photosynthesis- color-oriented VIs identify senescence cones late summer autumn during years, 2) if moisture-oriented distinguish significant drying surrounding canopy that after seeds are released. We hypothesized slope season decline would related masting (i.e., greater VI years). Using generalized linear mixed-effects modeling (GLMM), compared more than 100 site-year combinations mast/non-mast develop VI-based regressions. found some success identifying years VIs, while models using were not supported, given data. However, containing multiple both categories successful any single-VI model, accurately predicting four sixteen site observations. provide compelling evidence mast-seeding may detectable large coniferous areas. Additional warranted signal for confounding disturbance-related effects differentiate variation signals attributable productivity contrast climatological on reflectance.

Shoot-Forming Cultures of White Spruce (Picea glauca) Buds1

Nitrogen-14 and nitrogen-15 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra were recorded for freshly dissected buds of Picea glauca and for buds grown for 3, 6 and 9 weeks on shoot-forming medium. Resonances for Glu (and other aNH2 groups), Pro, Ala, and the side chain groups in Gin, Arg, Om, and 'y-aminobutyric acid could be detected in in vivo 15N NMR spectra. Peaks for aamino groups, Pro, N03and N...

Organellar Genomes of White Spruce (Picea glauca): Assembly and Annotation.

The genome sequences of the plastid and mitochondrion of white spruce (Picea glauca) were assembled from whole-genome shotgun sequencing data using ABySS. The sequencing data contained reads from both the nuclear and organellar genomes, and reads of the organellar genomes were abundant in the data as each cell harbors hundreds of mitochondria and plastids. Hence, assembly of the 123-kb plastid ...

Modular organization of the white spruce (Picea glauca) transcriptome reveals functional organization and evolutionary signatures

Transcript profiling has shown the molecular bases of several biological processes in plants but few studies have developed an understanding of overall transcriptome variation. We investigated transcriptome structure in white spruce (Picea glauca), aiming to delineate its modular organization and associated functional and evolutionary attributes. Microarray analyses were used to: identify and f...

An improved procedure for production of white spruce (Picea glauca) transgenic plants using Agrobacterium tumefaciens.

An efficient and reproducible procedure for the transformation of white spruce (Picea glauca [Moench] Voss) embryogenic tissues was developed using A. tumefaciens-mediated gene transfer. Rapidly dividing white spruce embryogenic tissues were co-cultivated with disarmed A. tumefaciens strains containing additional copies of the virulence regions from plasmid PToK47. The plasmid pBi121, containin...

SABATH methyltransferases from white spruce (Picea glauca): gene cloning, functional characterization and structural analysis.

Known members of the plant SABATH family of methyltransferases have important biological functions by methylating hormones, signalling molecules and other metabolites. While all previously characterized SABATH genes were isolated from angiosperms, in this article, we report on the isolation and functional characterization of SABATH genes from white spruce (Picea glauca [Moench] Voss), a gymnosp...
